Dr. Sun recognised this, but said that the first

step would be for the Kuangtung Provincial Government to

buy up the shares of the Provincial Company. He said that

if he stayed in Canton he would give early attention to

this. In his opinion it would be easy to buy up the

Company's shares, and once the Provincial Government had

acquired financial control of the wiek Ten Line, it would naturally follow that it would be incorporated in the Government system of rei lyg as soon an reunification of the can try was accomplished.

This mention of reunification turned the conver- sation into dher channele (see senarate memorandum).

As regards the Junction line, it may, I consider be felt that if r. Sun Bcceeds in establishing himself again in Canton, the prospect of joining up the two rail- ways whenever we are ready to provide the money (82,000,000) is good.

I informed Mr. Wen Te Chang, Managing Director of the Canton Kowloon Railway, of Dr. Sun's favourable attitude, end found Mr. Ton not only generally in favour of proceeding with the project, but quite keen on going ahead. Te does not think that Dr. Jum will be able to re-establish himsel”. The said that he would try throuch the Civil Governor to get nermission for "r. Roothy to make a final survey, in order that definite estimates of cost could be prepared.

According to Mr. "en, General um at Canton Arsenal is in lengua rith "u Pei-fu in opposition to Dr.Sun and Mr. Wen anticipates that Shum and Ch'on Ch'iung Min will drive Sun away from Canton very shortly. T'e admits, however, that no one can forecast with any certainty what may happen at Canton.
